I remember this tragic incident, because we live not all that far from where it happened, because I’ve taken that route, because my kids have, because a friend my niece went to highschool with was killed in it.
But I also know about TBIs.. very intimately- and it’s a place, not only something termed a ‘condition’..
great respect. For so many reasons. Thanking you for sharing it. 🙏
Thanks very much for your story. I was in the same car about 4 rows behind the midshipman. Also helped get people out through the windows that became the ceiling. Got a damaged knee, crushed ribs, and scratched corneas but I think about it only from time to time.
Ironically, some years later I was interviewed to be Amtrak's CEO. I wasn't chosen, probably for good reasons but they did admit that one concern was that I was a victim of the crash and knew that it could have been prevented if they'd turned on the safety equipment they'd already installed (but which DOT didn't require to be used until the end of that year -- and then deferred again).
I will always remember Rep. Patrick Murphy for his outstanding support for the LGBTQ+ Community. When he took a lady named Elaine Donnelly to task for trashing the gay community during a US House Hearing. He was very direct with Donnelly and her defamation of the community. She is an awful lady. Please watch this video it is only 4 minutes.
PATRICK, as a resident of Bucks County (Bedminster & Doylestown) I agree with Marilyn, we need you now to help get congress back on track. I voted for you before, and me and my friends will surely do so again. "Take the Hill"
I not only remember the crash, but I remember you, and your work in Congress. We are sorely lacking people of your caliber in our current government. My great thanks to you for what you've done, and best wishes for the future.
I remember this incident too. I was living where I do now in Colorado springs, Colorado and have taken Amtrack over the years without incident. I'm glad you survived along with all the rest. I am sorry for the loss you must feel in this train crash.
I'm not sure how/why I started receiving your posts, but I'm glad I did. It's time to stop hiding from our mental challenges. It's time to remove the stigma from mental illness of any sort.
I remember that night. Watching from TV at home outside of DC. Incredibly touched and proud of you for speaking so openly about TBI, strength, endurance, but most important seeking help. There is no shame in choosing ourselves and wanting to live a fuller, happier, and longer life. #breakthestigma #mentalhealthmatters
I remember this happening. I was glad to hear you were physically ok, I’m sorry that you struggled mentally. You are here because God has a plan for you. Continue to be the good person you are, keep your faith in God. Thank you for all you do!

Indeed your training habits and exercise regimen saved you. This essay exemplifies leadership in action.
Stay well; thank you for your military service and this essay.
I've known you all my life, and I didn't remember this incident.
You never fail to amaze and inspire me.
I only hope that should I ever experience something like this, I will pray that someone like you will be there to help me through.
So proud of you cousin.

Patrick, please consider running for office again. We need you now more than ever before!!!

I remember that day and the horror. What you did — and who you are — is inspirational. Thank you for sharing and, as always, for your service.

Truly remarkable!
Glad you survived all those catastrophic incidents Patrick. You’re a good man, and we need good men so badly now.

Patrick,
I never knew that you were ibn that train crash in Northeast Philly.
So very sorry to hear of this in your story today.
May your new life bring great things for those you reach on these bonus days, years of life.
